I believe you never knew that every year, the German government run a scholarship programme that is the best option for anyone looking for a scholarship. It is called DAAD (The German Academic Exchange Service – German Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst)

It is known to support over 100,000 German and international students and researchers around the world! – making it the world’s largest funding organisation.

This scholarship covers everything you need for your post-graduate program starting from your; tuition fees, visa fee, flat rate allowance for your flight ticket, two months of german classes prior to the start of your program, assistance in getting your student accommodation, a monthly stipend of €861 for masters level and €1,200 for doctoral/PhD student. They also provide you with health, accident and personal liability insurance and for the PhD students, a one-off research allowance and family benefits incase you are interested in moving with your spouse and kids.

All these to say one thing; ”Focus on your studies and get the best grade and experience possible, while we take care of you”.

This is definitely a big deal especially for students from developing countries who may need to break an arm and a leg to afford to study abroad. Well, now that you have know more about the DAAD Scholarship, permit me to tell you the most important information you will be needing.

  • There is no age limit for the scholarship. Hence, your age does not stand as a qualifying factor.
  • You can apply in your last year of study (Bachelors or masters). As long as you meet all the academic requirements set out in the call for applications by the time your funding period begins. You will also need to submit your certificate by that time.
  • Your country of origin is important for your application so ensure that your country of origin and Nationality is in line with the requirements for the scholarship.
  • Make sure that there is a link between your previous degree and the intended program. If this is not the case, at least your work experience should indicate knowledge and interest in the intended field.
  • You will mostly not be allowed to work more than a specific number of hours and your income from the job should not exceed 450 € per month.
  • If you wish to work part-time during your scholarship period, note that you require the approval of DAAD. Your academic supervisor or course coordinator must also give their consent. DAAD will verify that the part-time employment does not interfere with the purpose of the scholarship. Additional, if the income exceeds €450 gross per month, it shall be deducted from the monthly scholarship payment.
  • You should have at least 2 years work experience in the intended field. You will need a professional reference to prove this.
  • You should have a grade of 2:1 (Second Class Upper Credits in the Nigerian system) and above in your previous degree.
  • You should be able to prove your proficiency in the language of instruction. This can be through IELTS (best to have this) or an English proficiency letter from your University. This letter might not be accepted by all programs so confirm before you opt for this.

Select your intention, that is what you are interested in doing; an internship or teaching, etc.

STEP 7

Check the box that says “DAAD funding programmes only”

STEP 8

Click on “Refine Your Selection” to enable you see only offers that you can work with.
